How to Choose the Right Hound Tee for Your Long Dog

It all comes down to four things.

  • Temperature
  • Activity
  • Your dog’s preferences
  • Sizing

Let’s break them down.

Temperature

Our warmth levels make it easy to choose the right Hound Tee for the day. Here is the quick guide.

  • Warmth Factor 1 Sleeveless Tees
  • Warmth Factor 2 Long Sleeve Tees
  • Warmth Factor 2.5 Long Johns
  • Warmth Factor 3 Tweaters
  • Warmth Factor 4 to 5 Sweatshirts

The golden rule is simple. If you are cold, your hound is probably already cold. Their thin skin, short fur and lean bods make it hard for them to regulate their temperature.

Dress them the same way you would dress yourself for the weather. If in doubt, choose the warmer option unless you are about to let them stretch their quick stix. High intensity activities can cause overheating if the garment is too heavy, which brings us to our next point.

Activity

If your hound is settling in for a snooze, planning a full day of roaching or hogging the couch, a warmer option such as Long Johns or a Sweatshirt is perfect. The only exception is a hot Aussie day.

Dressing your hound for activity on cooler days is where things get interesting. Layering works a treat.

  • Start with a base layer
  • Add a sweatshirt for the warm up
  • Remove the sweatshirt before a sprint
  • Layer again for the walk home

Think about how you would dress yourself for a brisk walk and cooldown. Same logic applies to your long dog.

Your Dog’s Preferences

Some houndies are chill about anything you put on them. Others are firm members of the free the twig club. If your dog does not enjoy fabric on their back legs, Long Johns will not be their vibe. A Tweater or a Long Sleeve Tee with a Sweatshirt combo is usually a good alternative.

Neck styles matter too. Crew necks are great for daily comfort. Skivvies are perfect for walks or extra snuggly days. Since not every moment calls for a skivvy, having both options on hand gives you flexibility.

If your dog is new to clothing, start simple. A Sleeveless Tee has the least fabric and is the easiest to pop on and off. Many new hounds are unsure about having their paws handled, so Long Sleeves may be better once they feel settled and safe.

Sizing

Sizing is the easiest step. Measure your doggo and compare with our size chart. If they fall between sizes, choose the larger one.

Sweatshirts are intentionally baggier because they are made to be worn as an outer layer. Tees are more fitted to create that sleek, comfy Hound Fashun silhouette.
